Hi everyone,

I had a bit of a play around with a CMS, messed around with advertising a bit, but I'm bored of this site now. I might bring it back at some point if I have free time :)

"Searching For Sonny" is mooted to be the first "proper" movie shot on a DSLR camera. OK, it's a bloody good camera, but nevertheless, another step closer to unifying still cameras and serious camcorders.

Flip Mino HD review

Reg Hardware give the Flip Mino HD 75%.

"Still, the image quality turns out to be pretty good – just about sharp enough to live up to the HD tag, and with bold, strong colours. There’s a slight tendency for colours to wash out in strong sunlight, but the main problem we found with the Flip Mino HD is that its size and weight make it very susceptible to every little shake of your hands. The no-frills design means that it doesn’t have any of the image stabilization features found in more expensive camcorders, and we found that there was often a slight shakiness to the image no matter how hard we tried to steady our hand."

In my opinion, the VLC Media Player is the canine's pods when it comes to video playing software (with a nice surprise around Christmas time). I was a little bit too excited therefore, when I read that version 0.9.9 (come on guys - bite the bullet and release an official version) has been released for all platforms.

Listen to that Rumour mill cranking up again...

"Two separate sites seem to be in consistency with a rumor on Final Cut Studio 3 being released shortly. However, Apple is said to initially release a 32-bit version of the suite testing updates to the video software. Soon after, a 64-bit Final Cut Studio 3 will allegedly be compatible only with Snow Leopard due to system requirements."

Camcorder review roundup: 4th April 2009

My goodness, we've got another cruise-liner load of camcorder reviews for you today!

A particularly prominent feature is the Sony TG7VE -Another "World's smallest HD camcorder". Whilst there are no actual proper reviews of the thing, there's plenty of news about it. Take a pick from your random website of choice: ShinyShiny, PCWorld.com, PCMag.com, PhotographyBlog, TrustedReviews and finally Camcorderinfo. Phew!

Staying in the Sony camp, Cnet give a proper review of the Handycam HDR-CX100.

HardwareZone reveal that Canon has announced 7 new Legria Camcorders.

"What does LEGRIA mean? According to Canon, the name's inspired by the Spanish word allegria, which means 'joy' in English. The seven camcorders are divided into three categories; the HF high definition series, the FS standard definition series and the flagship HF-S high definition series."

More announcements in the form of the Sanyo 2009 line, including the waterproof VPC-WH1.

"Among the new camcorders are the 1080p 60 frames per second VPC-FH1, VPC-WH1 720p HD camcorder with 30x optical zoom that works to 10 feet under water for an hour. Other new cameras include the VPC-TH1 and VPC-CG10. "

Mount it on your helmet. Yeah. That's the intention for the VholdR - the "flip camcorder for sports". 280 of your US Dollars.

Nearly there... The Panasonic HDC-SD20 gets a going-over from CamcorderInfo, with a comparison against the Sanyo VPC-HD2000, the Canon HF20 and the Sony MHS-CM1.

"The Panasonic HDC-SD20 offers a truly entry-level high definition camcorder experience. The video performance isn't in the same league as the Canon HF20 but neither is the price tag. For $300 less, we weren't expecting the smooth motion or vivid colors of the competition."

Last one for today - TrustedReviews give the Toshiba Camileo P30 a 6 out of 10. Why? Find out.

Another JVC Camcorder review, and it's from... TrustedReviews as usual (I really like that site). This time, they look at the low priced GZ-MS120, which gets 8/10.

"The Everio GZ-MS120 retains the half-decent image quality which made its predecessor a contender, and adds one or two extra features."

A few items of worth regarding YouTube today...

The New York Times writes about China lifting the YouTube ban...

"The block came during a week when China was criticizing an Internet video, released by the Tibetan government in exile and put up on YouTube and other Web sites, that showed Chinese security officers beating handcuffed Tibetans."

The Daily Telegraph mention Google's plans to place ads into 'commercial breaks' of online videos.

Finally, YouTube's blog has information about their "Call to Action" feature.

"The response from the YouTube community was overwhelming -- thanks to you, charity:water was able to raise over $10,000 in one day from the video. That's enough to build two brand-new wells in the Central African Republic and give over 150 people clean drinking water for 20 years!"

Following on from The Unofficial Apple Weblog's story on Monday, Register Hardware have put the Elgato Turbo.264 HD Hi-def H.264 encoder on their bench, poked it, prodded it, then inserted it into their Mac to see whether it could live up to it's promises.

"Turbo.264 HD's camcorder support continues with the ability to drive a connected camera to extract AVCHD footage from it."

Kodak Zx1 unboxing and review

Engadget's Paul Miller gives his opinion on the Kodak Zx1 "YouTubeCam" after unboxing it and giving it a bit of a test run, supplying an example of the footage he's captured.

"Kodak jumped into the market last year with one of the earliest HD models, the $179 Zi6. Now they've followed up with the Zx1, a $149 "rugged" camera for, um, ruggedness. They're aiming the camera at outdoor types, but with a smaller form factor, better build, lower price, HDMI output, and 60fps 720p recording (the original maxes out at 30fps 720p), about the only thing you'll be missing from the Zi6 is a macro mode."

Harnessing the power of your GPU

Something a lot of people don't know is that the vast majority of Video Editing programs don't use a video card's GPU for processing. Basically, a £300 video card would probably be no better than a £30 video card when it comes to video encoding with most video editing programs. But with nVidia's CUDA and AMD/ATI's Stream technology, this, at long last, is looking to change. Michael J Miller from PCMag.com explains a bit more about GPU Computing.
